Book-giving day. What an awesome result!

Book giving day

Well done to all the families who donated books or coins for Beckenham School on International Book-giving Day. The result was amazing. When I delivered the books I had so many boxes  in my car I could not fit anymore. Even the passenger seat was full.

Beckenham school was very grateful for your kind donations. A book voucher was bought with the money so the librarian could buy some special books they may not have yet. I am proud of you all. Great team players and you have added sparkle to another school. Brilliant work.

Sandy Hastings, Principal of Beckenham School and Desna surrounded by boxes of books donated to their school.

International Book giving day

Wow! What a wonderful response from the children here at Fendalton School. It was so lovely to see the smiles on the faces of children bringing in books or coins for Beckenham School. Sure adds flavour to the saying “it is better to give than to receive”.

The photo shows just some of the books kindly donated on International Book Giving Day which will be taken to Beckenham School next week. Thank you to everyone for supporting this event.

If you want to read more about where these books are going check out the article in today’s Press newspaper

Bear has a story to tell

This is a delightful new book to our library. It is so new in fact, that I haven’t even processed it but it is just too lovely to wait.

Bear has a story to tell
By Philip C Stead
Illustrated by Erin E Stead

It is a story of friendship and patience. I love the faces of the animals when bear finally sits down to talk.

Check out this book trailer as a sneak preview to the book.

Welcome back to the first term of 2013

Hello everyone

I hope you all had a fantastic holiday and enjoyed the wonderful sunny days we had. I also hope you had a chance to read a good book or two. Do come and tell me if you did. I would love to hear all about it.

In the previous post I mentioned about the terrible fire at Beckenham school and how they lost their lovely library. Well, we can do something about it. This is how we can help.

On February 14th it is International Book Giving Day. People are encouraged to give books to their friends. We would love it if you could bring a book – new or second hand is fine as long as it is a reasonably current title and we will donate them all to Beckenham School. If you would rather just bring a gold coin then that is fine too. This will allow them to buy books they may be wanting. There is no obligation at all but we would love to see our community helping another community at such a difficult time.

Here is the link to the official site.

So, if you want to help please bring a book to school on the 14th February. There will be a drop box in the library if you want to do this before the 14th.

Thanks for supporting Beckenham School.

Beckenham School Fire

I hope everyone is enjoying their holidays. Haven’t we had some wonderful sunny days. I’ve been sitting in the garden reading which is wonderful. I hope you have had a chance to read a book or two.

However, it  is very sad news that Beckenham school has lost its lovely library in a fire this week.

Take a look at the librarian’s blog to see some of the photos of this awful fire. When we go back to school we will be thinking of ways we can help our fellow Cantabrians. I was at the school yesterday and the smell was very bad and it was very sad talking with the librarian, Anne but she is being very brave for the children and it would be good if we could support their school in some small way. More news later but in the mean time – keep enjoying the sun and holidays.

The WORST Thing About My Sister!

The worst thing about my sister is she never sticks up for me… The worst thing about my sister is a very captivating novel written by Jacqueline Wilson and illustrated by Nick Sharratt.

It is about a girl called Martina who likes to be called Marty and she’s an absolute tom boy but on the other hand her older sister Melissa is such a prissy pink girlie girl. The book is based on Martina telling us her life . Martina calls her bedroom her very own Marty Den and has a super hero called Mighty Mart that she dreams about night after night and wishes she was him. However when her sister Melissa finds something’s gone missing from her bedroom they end up on the ground fighting with each other until…. somebody goes that little too far and there’s an injury.

The Worst Thing About My Sister is a gripping novel that you will not be able to put down once you have started reading it so I really recommend reading this book especially if you have a sister you will be attached to this book like glue.

Unreal

By Paul Jennings

Unreal is a book of different exciting stories written by Paul Jennings. The stories include Without a Shirt,
The Strap-Box Flyer, Lucky Lips, Cow Dung Custard, Lighthouse Blues, Smart Ice-Cream, and Wunderpants.

My favorite is Lighthouse Blues. It is about a boy who comes to an island to help an old lighthouse keeper. However, every Friday night, music plays, and the boy suspects it has something to do with the lighthouse keeper’s ancestors.

I thought this book was great and exciting. I think that you should look for it in your library.

This is not my hat

This is not my hat

by Jon Klassen

This is one of those delightful picture books to read to any age.

“A fish has stolen a hat. And he’ll probably get away with.” Hmm but will he?

The humour is wonderful and the illustrations are just gorgeous. Do come and check it out but you might need to be quick as I know the teachers all want to share this one too. The trailer just makes me smile. Do have a look.

Wonder by R. J. Palacio

Wonder

By R. J. Palacio

Room 9 have just finished reading this powerful novel. Everyone loved it and there were even some tears. If a book can move you that much then it is a sign of quality writing.

In fact the novel has been a huge success globally. One result of the book is that there is now a growing movement called Choose Kind. It is a way to stop and think about making choices in everyday situations. Choose to be kind – a great incentive to stop bullying.

Read the story of Auggie and how he goes from home-schooled to public school. Not that difficult normally but  Auggie is different. His facial deformities scare people off, some even run away screaming. This really is a powerful book about acceptance, about being different and fitting in. This really is a book to put at the top of your list.

Term four – short and sharp but full of fun and learning

I hope you all had a wonderful break and are now all excited to get started on the last term of the year.

The library looks lovely with the blossoms out in full.

Room 10 (year 6) have been working on some book reviews of their favourite books. These will be posted here over the coming days. Enjoy reading the reviews and of course come and get the book out if you like the sound of the books.

    Artemis Fowl

Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer is in my opinion one of the best books in the world. Printed in 2001 and the first in the series it gives a fantastic     twist of magic and crime.

A teenage child prodigy from Ireland who has dedicated his brilliant mind to criminal activities. He meets a race of technologically advanced fairies. This is going to be interesting!

This is an amazing book, hilarious with some laugh out loud jokes. I highly recommend this book and if you enjoy this novel read some other Eoin Colfer books such as Airman and the Super-Naturalists.

Cherub – The Killing

The Killing is the fourth book in the unique CHERUB series, written by Robert Muchamore. It was first published in 2005, by Hodder Children’s books.

The book centers on James Adams, where you follow him as his first day when his mum dies in the recruit, through the several gripping novels in the series.

James is sent  to figure out where Leon, a car sales man got a whole load of money. But, what James starts to unravel isn’t what he thinks. And the only person who might know the truth is a depressed 18 year old boy.

The problem is, the boy committed suicide thirteen months earlier.
Or was it murder??

want to know the answer?
find out in the book.

Please note : this is not available through our library as it is a book for more mature readers. Ella loves the series but has borrowed the book from the public library.

The brilliant world of Tom Gates

    by Liz Pichon

If you are looking for a nice easy funny novel then you should go and get the first Tom Gates.

In Tom Gates it is based on him and his friend.  One time in the morning he was running late and  he couldn’t find his fleece. He  was looking all around his house. After he looked every he found it outside on the line but is was so wet so he either had to wear a wet fleece or put it in the dryer on full power.  He put it in the dryer and guess what his fleece SHRUNK.

So if you think that sounds good then you should go and get it.

Roald Dahl Day

September 13th is international Roald Dahl Day. He is always a favourite here at school.

His books are both a little dark and a whole lot of fun.

If you want a good laugh then come and grab one of the many Roald Dahl books we have.

Websites for fun and learning

  Not just for fun

We have been exploring this new search engine kidrex which is great for doing research. Many of you are doing special topics so it is worth checking out as I know you will find something useful here. It has been checked as ‘kidsafe’ and that means it is a safe site to use. Remember however, that at any time you are on the Internet whether at school or at home, if you leave a page, sometimes you end up where you don’t want to be. Remember your digital safety rules and tell an adult and close the page immediately. I’ve added a few favourites as well.

Remember also that these links and heaps more can be found on the “Homework Page”. The link is at the top of this page.

Christchurch City kidsblog

The Christchurch City Library kids blog  is great and has competitions all the time. One special competition is a chance to win a book on ‘Free book Friday’.

Do take a look anytime but especially Fridays if you want to try and win a book. During book week we had a special visit from Zac who read a number of books to the juniors and middle teams. Well, Zac manages this kids blog so you already know him.

2012 Olympic Games Medalists living the dream

Olympic heroes

Many of the year 5 and 6 students waited on the corner of Clyde Road today to catch a glimpse of some of New Zealand’s best sports people as they were driven past on double decker buses. The students performed an arousing, impromptu haka as the 2012 Olympic Games medalists went by. I’m not sure who was more thrilled; the children, at seeing the Olympians or the medalists seeing the children perform.

Our focus this fortnight is on dream making and these special people have worked hard all their lives and dedicated themselves to their sports in order to make their dreams come true. Perhaps, some day you too can be up on those double decker buses.
