Sophisticated picture books for the holidays

Yes, it is holiday time again. Last day of a very long term.

I hope you all enjoy the two weeks break and get plenty of time to relax. However, for those wanting to read some tricky picture books and get stuck into some good thinking, come and issue  some of the latest sophisticated picture books.

Farther

By  Grahame Baker-Smith

This is a great book about dreams and making dreams come through. Dream maker!

The Great Bear

By Libby Gleeson

The art in this book is a little scary but there is so much to look at in this book. It is a good one to think of how we  treat

animals.

Varmints

By Helen Ward

This is gorgeous! Great pictures, great story. You can even check out the short movie of this below.

Sophisticated picture books

Take a close look at our sophisticated picture books. These books are ideal for any age.

The stories have impact and the illustrations hold so much more than what you see at first glance.
There are hidden symbols, meanings and concepts that are worth spending time to enjoy.
There is a number of new ones on display in the library but don’t forget the sophisticated books stand also for all the old favourites.
Especially good is anything by Colin Thompson.
The big little book of happy sadness
Random House 2008
George is lonely but finds a scruffy dog just as lonely as he is in an animal shelter. It is a delightful story, both sad and happy. The illustrations are quirky which perfectly suit George and his grandmother.

Thank you Tawhiti School

Thank you to the staff and children of Tawhiti school for donating the wonderful book  ” The odd egg” by Emily Gravett.  We were lucky to have some of the staff  visiting us last week from their school  in Taranaki.

Emily Gravett writes and illustrates truly amazing books. Her picture books are both sophisticated and subtle.  Her web site is also amazing.
