Captain Underpants author Dav Pilkey coming to our school soon

We are so excited to be hosting a free event for Dav Pilkey, the author of the very popular Captain Underpants books. We have multiple copies of his books but they are never on the library shelves as they are always out being read by children. He will be at our school on Saturday 23rd May at 12pm. Check the school newsletter for more information or come and see me in the library.

This is a ticketed event and there will be no entry without a ticket. Tickets can be picked up from Desna in the school library but they will only be given out to adults. You can also obtain tickets from The Children’s Bookshop on Blenheim Road.

This event will be advertised in papers next week and we expect a rush so do get in quickly or you might miss out.

If you want to read more about Dav Pilkey and his books click here.

Enjoy watching the trailers about some of his books.

Book of the week this week is What if by Anthony Browne

What if

By Anthony Browne

5

This is a very special book about feeling insecure in unfamiliar situations.

“What if Joe doesn’t like the party he’s going to? What if he doesn’t like the food, or the games, or the people?”

This is ideal for learning to over-come your fears and becoming comfortable in new surroundings.

Watch below as Anthony Browne reads his story for you. Remember that you can also use the library ipad to scan the QR code on the library shelf and watch it again and again. There are many other QR codes around the library shelves. Just ask me if you need any help and we can watch them together.

The books will be ready in a day or two for borrowing.

In the mean time you can watch this clip of Tom as he introduces his friends.

Then a mysterious stranger spots her performing on the street. He makes a deal with her father and Diamond is sold. She is forced to become an acrobat at Tanglefield’s Travelling Circus by her wicked and greedy master. Will Diamond make friends or will life just be too dangerous and lonely?

Clemintine Rose – Great new chapter books for year 3 – 4 girls

Clemintine Rose

By Jacqueline Harvey

Clemintine Rose is a great new series just right for girls in the middle school.

“Clementine Rose is so excited! She’s going to start school with her best friends Sophie and Poppy and she can’t wait. But when she gets there, instead of the lovely Miss Critchley, her teacher is the much sterner and shoutier Mrs Bottomley. And then there’s Angus, a little boy who delights in tormenting her from the moment they first meet.”

I have just bought the third book in this series.  You may need to come and see me to reserve these books as they are very popular.

If you just can’t wait you can click here and read the first chapter online for free. Or you can click here to visit the author’s website. I love reading about authors and I am sure you will too.

ANZAC Day display and competition

ANZAC Day is on the 25th April and even though it is during the holidays we still want to think about the day and all that it stands for.

We have a display in the library with many new books to look at and posters with lots of information.

There is even a competition where you have a chance to win books. Take a good look at the display and then answer some simple questions. A great way to brush up your information literacy skills and learn things as well.

Come and see me in the library if you are interested.

One of the new books is called

ANZAC the New Zealand Story : what it is and why it matters.

It is written by Philippa Werry.

This is a great book with heaps of information about why we have ANZAC Day and what it all means.

Did you know that  the youngest New Zealander to die at Gallipoli was Private James Martin and he was only 14 years old. Very sad but you can read lots of other interesting things about Gallipoli when you come to the library.

Liesl & Po by Lauren Oliver

Liesl & Po

By Lauren Oliver

It was lovely to see a group of readers hovering over this book in the library today. Isabella was very impressed with the language in this book, even reading out the first line to me and then sharing it with Mr Sibson as well.  She had already conjured up images in her mind because of the descriptive language. The story and illustrations also impressed the group so much that it now has a number of requests to read it next. Great stuff! Check out the trailer and see if it is a book you might want to read too. It is a story about a ghost, magic, and a young orphan. I thoroughly enjoyed it when I read it.

Bear has a story to tell
By Philip C Stead
Illustrated by Erin E Stead

It is a story of friendship and patience. I love the faces of the animals when bear finally sits down to talk.

Check out this book trailer as a sneak preview to the book.

This is not my hat

This is not my hat

by Jon Klassen

This is one of those delightful picture books to read to any age.

“A fish has stolen a hat. And he’ll probably get away with.” Hmm but will he?

The humour is wonderful and the illustrations are just gorgeous. Do come and check it out but you might need to be quick as I know the teachers all want to share this one too. The trailer just makes me smile. Do have a look.

Wonder by R. J. Palacio

Wonder

By R. J. Palacio

Room 9 have just finished reading this powerful novel. Everyone loved it and there were even some tears. If a book can move you that much then it is a sign of quality writing.

In fact the novel has been a huge success globally. One result of the book is that there is now a growing movement called Choose Kind. It is a way to stop and think about making choices in everyday situations. Choose to be kind – a great incentive to stop bullying.

Read the story of Auggie and how he goes from home-schooled to public school. Not that difficult normally but  Auggie is different. His facial deformities scare people off, some even run away screaming. This really is a powerful book about acceptance, about being different and fitting in. This really is a book to put at the top of your list.

Dinosaur rescue

Dinosaur Rescue is a new series by writer Kyle Mewburn and illustrated by Donovan Bixley.

Stone-Age boy Arg  meets Skeet – the talking T-Rex. No-one understands Arg or why he even wants to wear clothes. And whoever heard of a talking dinosaur?

Lots of humour, lots of adventure and lots of yucky stuff too. If you like grotty, disgusting habits then this book is for you.

And just in case you are wondering – it was the library girls who wanted this on the blog. So defintiley not just a book for boys but a book for everyone.

Check out the trailers first.

This year saw the 60th year in print for one of the world’s classic children’s stories.

Charlotte’s web by E. B. White,  has remained a favourite for so many people. Children and adults both enjoy the wonderful story of wise and nuturing Charlotte the spider and the sweet and innocent pig named Wilbur.

We have copies in the library if you have missed this great book.

The one and only Ivan

The one and only Ivan

By Katherine Applegate

This book is just the best. I love it.

Ivan is a Silverback gorilla, forced to live at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade. He remembers little of his past but loves art and painting or drawing on paper.  Important too, are his faithful friends; Stella, an elephant, Bob a stray dog who loves sleeping on Ivan’s big warm stomach and Julia a young girl who also loves art.  The language in this book is beautiful. It is simple,  clear and concise. Gorillas don’t need too many words. Ivan thinks humans talk too much. “Humans waste words. They toss them like banana peels and leave them to rot.”  Ivan narrates the story and it is not long before we are totally captivated by his beliefs, his strengths and his love. When Ruby, a baby elephant arrives at the mall it becomes clear that something has to change. Ivan is forced to make a promise that will leave you gasping.  This truly is a beautiful book.  You will not be disappointed. Magic!

We have this book although on issue at the moment but I have ordered another as I know this is going to be favourite for so many of you. Come and place a reserve if you want a great book to read.

The Great Bear

The art in this book is a little scary but there is so much to look at in this book. It is a good one to think of how we  treat

animals.
